Gerald,
This may be why Ralphs supermarket chain is trying the turbopak.

04/29/98 - Grocery Firms Sued Over Diesel-Truck Emissions
Sacramento - Four of California's largest grocery store chains have been sued by the state attorney general for allegedly creating excessive cancer risks for residents living near supermarket distribution centers, reports the Los Angeles Times. Diesel-powered trucks from the centers - often located near residential areas - reportedly cause residents to breathe 15 times more diesel exhaust than the average Los Angeles citizen, which multiplies the cancer threat by 10 to 100 times. The suits by California Attorney General Dan Lungren, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Coalition for Clean Air and the Environmental Law Council are designed to spur the fleets to convert to cleaner-burning fuels such as natural gas. Named in the suit are five facilities operated by Vons, Ralphs, Lucky Stores and Stater Bros. in Southern California and San Leandro in Northern California. Recently, a state panel declared diesel exhaust carcinogenic (News Notes 4/23/98); those findings are mirrored by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency draft report (NNs 4/10/98).
