Looks like another round of technology upgrades is being started by the DRAM makers: A move to 256Mb chips at 0.18æm.

S Korean Chip Makers To Mass Produce 256M DRAMs

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Taking advantage of the won's weakness, major semiconductor makers in South Korea are planning to begin mass production of 256-megabit DRAM chips by 1999, industry sources say.

The move is expected to prompt major Japanese chip makers, many of which have already postponed volume production of the advanced chips to 2000 or later, to rethink their strategy.

According to a senior LG Semicon Co. official, the Korean firm hopes to resume construction of a chip plant in Wales as early as August. The company intends to begin production of 256M DRAMs in mid-1999 at the U.K. plant, which was originally designed for manufacturing 64M DRAMs.

The plant, capable of manufacturing memory chips with circuit widths of 0.18 microns, is expected to cost about 150 billion yen.

Another leading Korean chip maker, Samsung Electronics Co., has already begun shipments of 256M DRAM samples. It plans to begin volume production in early 1999, a Samsung official said.
