It is been my experience that sell offs going into an extended weekend is fairly common, particularly if there are profits to take off the table. IMO this is an outcome of the market's tendency to sell on Fridays not wanting to hold onto positions over the weekend. Weekends like Memorial Day quite often are preceded by sell offs which lead to a flat to down day for the market just before the holiday weekend. Even when I have not tracked the market as closley as I have been doing now, I remember this event over the years frequently has been reported on by CNBC and other news stations where I see it has been a familiar part of the market for quite some time, going back decades.

So even though I have not looked at the charts for a long history of this market pattern, I would be surprised if a charting could not find evidence of this. Now it is another question if at any given holiday weekend if a trader could profit from the market's tendency to sell off. This is an entirely different question.
