I think the market in semi-equips is awaiting some direction. Everyone seems to be talking primarily about trying to decide when the "Asia Crisis" is "over". Since the closing on week ending 6 Feb, a period of 12 weeks, the group average has changed about 1 percent. During those 12 weeks, the story has been - up a few percent for a week or two and then down a few percent for a week or two.

I keep looking for that catalyst that will start the next "bull run" like during the last part of April 1997. Maybe it will be like 1996 and never come at all this year, but instead, wait for next year.

One of the events that may lend some direction to the market is the quarterly earnings report expected early next week on AMAT results. Even more important that the quarterly results will be the outlook for the next several quarters projected by senior AMAT management. I have seen it work both ways so far. In some cases very little market direction change from the AMAT earnings announcement, in other cases, a substantial change. One thing for sure, AMAT performance and outlook has a big effect on semi-equip group performance.
