Doug, you make some very good points. One area I have to disagree with you on though is DVD. I would agree that DVD eventually needs recordable function to take over the VHS world completely. But to be successful, DVD does not need to take over VHS right away.

CD's are a huge industry. The advantage for OEM's and individuals to move to DVD will be compelling enough without recordable capabilities. Multimedia intensive childrens programs as well as so much more will demand greater storage capacity. DVD is ready now to provide it. A year from now, everyone without DVD will want to upgrade their computers to it. The industry is moving faster than ever in this direction.

The backward compatibility makes it a no-brainer consumer migration. CREAF should benifit tremendously over the next year as consumers elect to switch to DVD vs a faster CDROM. There are millions of people like myself, who still have 8X CDROMS and are getting frustrated by their lack of speed.

I also noticed recently in my local video store the DVD rental section is steadily growing. As I looked at it yesterday, I wondered how soon it would be before it encompasses the entire store and VHS is left with those few racks. Probably sooner than we think. People like Sony who control movie content would like nothing better than for billions of consumers to throw out their low margin VHS's, and buy a new DVD player. The economics makes a compelling case to agree on a recordable standard quickly.
