Maybe I am showing my age, but it seems to me that having possession of what you have paid for in cash should be more comforting than having it on some computer in your broker's office. Especially since you can still sell at any time and then mail your certs back within three days (my understanding only, please check with your broker). Yet some people seem more secure with that arrangement. Guess that's the 90's for you :-)

The only downside I see is if you have the certs and the house catches fire, so if you sell you could not mail back the certs. I bet even in that case there is some fee you pay to re-generate the certs, but I would not want to chance it. I would lock them away.
