Here is a few reasons why Java has a chance.

Java is going to be ISO certified. That means it will be open for any ISV. The problem with MS is that its OS is partly open and they use it to control ISV. If you are not obeying MS they withhold new release info.


I do not believe that ISO or ANSI certification can make a programming language or environment dominant. Marketing and applications will.

I seem to recall several other development tools that are controlled by standards bodies or a single developer other than Microsoft. None have faired all that well.

These are interesting times!
