PC Server Shipments Rise 51.7 Pct. in Japan in '97 May 4, 1998 (TOKYO) -- Sales of PC servers continued to grow substantially in Japan last year, although sales of UNIX servers fell, a Gartner Group Japan KK survey found. The survey showed that shipments of UNIX servers in 1997 increased by only 6.6 percent to 41,558 units, but that of PC servers jumped by 51.7 percent to 172,376 units compared with the previous year.
NEC Corp., which has increased its market share from 25.7 percent last year to 27.3 percent, tops other makers with the largest share of the PC server market. This is followed by Fujitsu Ltd. with 14 percent, IBM Japan Ltd. with 13.7 percent, Compaq Computer KK with 13.3 percent and Hitachi Ltd. with 7.4 percent.
Hewlett-Packard Japan Ltd. has the largest share of the UNIX server market with 24 percent, followed by Fujitsu with 22 percent, Nihon Sun Microsystems KK with 19.5 percent, IBM Japan with 8.3 percent and NEC with 7.6 percent. The share rankings are the same as last year.
The survey divided shipments of UNIX and PC servers into four categories: servers priced below 1 million yen (US$7,600), servers priced between 1 million yen and 3 million yen, servers set between 3 million yen to 10 million yen and servers priced above 10 million yen.
The survey showed that in the below-1-million-yen category, shipments of PC servers soared by 81.2 percent, while shipments of UNIX servers dropped by 66.5 percent compared with last year.
PC server evidently dominated the market in the low-price category.
However, in the 1-million-yen-to-3-million yen, 3-million-yen-to-10-million yen and above 10-million-yen categories, both PC and UNIX servers registered increases between 10 to 20 percent.
The Gartner Group also released its market projections for 1998. It predicts that shipments of PC servers this year will increase by only about 20.1 percent to 207,000 units compared with last year because of the economic slump and the delayed shipment of Windows NT5.0 this year.
It also predicts that even though PC servers have increased their market share, UNIX servers will still enjoy a healthy growth of about 8.8 percent. ______________________________________________________________________
