Mr. Andrew Sukawaty, the CEO of Sprint PCS, told wireless industry leaders at the Yankee Group's fourth annual conference on "Mobile Communications: Strategies for the Enterprise", according to Telecom A.M., that everything was going well with the much-promised effort to bring PCS to 15 to 20 of its 32 major trading areas (MTAs) by the end of the year.

“We're within a couple of weeks of launches,” Sukawaty said. “But surprise is a useful element in this business, and I'm not going to tell as much as you'd like.”

After his speech, Sukawaty was asked by Telecom A.M. about reported problems with CDMA phones manufactured by Qualcomm and Sony.

“Was there a problem with handsets? You're right,” he said. “Has
it been taken care of? You bet.”

Sukawaty added that Sprint PCS now has “no problem with volume production of handsets.” Earlier this year the company had made agreements with Qualcomm-Sony to supply 500,000 handsets, and another 300,000 from Samsung.
