It is government's responsibility to set the legal framework that makes capitalism work. With no regulation we would be back to the days of John D. Rockefeller and the Standard Oil Company. Monopoly is not in the interest of economic efficiency or the consumer. Bill Gate's stranglehold on PC operating systems does him the power to put a gun to the head of both hardware and software providers and gives him an unfair advantage that stifles innovation and new ventures. It really surprises me how many techie types rush to his defense, when innovation stimulated by competition is one of the keys to future technical development.
