"Typical Iomega" - Zip Plus Rumblings from Usenet I noticed a couple of threads have already started up in <alt.iomega.zip.jazz> about the Zip Plus problems. Seems there are some unhappy campers who bought the Zip Plus under the pretense that it can work as a SCSI device should. Pay careful attention to this post's claims that Iomega Customer Support (this is an oxymoron) says if your Zip Plus is past warranty, you are basically "s--- out of luck." The post is printed in its entirety. Re:ZIP PLUS WARNING FROM IOMEGA!! -NEW Information I called Iomega Tech Support about this. They said that the symptoms when the Zip Plus is daisy-chained to other SCSI devices. or used with anything other than a 25 pin SCSI connector are data corruption when copying files to the Zip Disk. The files may seem to get copied but will not really be the same as the original file. IMO, this is the worst type of insidious data corruption. The problem is not there with the original SCSI external Zip drive. The Customer service offered the following "deal": Iomega will exchange the Zip Plus for an external SCSI Zip (I did not ask if this will be a re-furbished drive) and 6 Zip disks (to compensate for the extra $100 we spent on the Plus.) The exchange offer is valid only while the Zip Plus is in Warranty. After that you're SOL. (*S--- out of luck. -ed.) I think that Iomega should have more than offer an exchange in the warranty period. They sold the product to us under false (or incorrect) claims. If they later find out that they cannot deliver on the product claims (as on the product box and the documentation that is in the box), then they should fix the product to meet those promised specs. It appeared that Iomega has no plans to "fix" the Zip Plus hardware or firmware to allow it to be used as a part of a SCSI chain or with pin converters on wide or ultra wide scsi cards. Personally, I have been using my Zip Plus chained to a scanner. The scanner is connected to adaptec 2940 UW using a 68 pin to Centronics converter. The scanner has a 25 oin port, to which, I have the Zip Plus connected using their "Auto Detect" cable. So far, everything SEEMS to be working fine. I use the Zip disks to transfer files between work and home, not for anything intensive like backup or running applications off the Zip disk.. I'm in a quandry now (like most Plus owners). Should I exchange my drive (and lose out the flexibility of using it on SCSI and parallel ports, on-off switch, faster cached speeds, etc) and get 6 zip disks (worth $75)? Or continue to play Russian Roulette with my data? Aloke
