Intel Corp., citing yield improvements, has modified its 1998 Celeron road map.
The Santa Clara, Calif., company will introduce a 300MHz cacheless Celeron next month and a 333MHz version with 128KB of integrated L2 cache in the fourth quarter, according to Intel spokeswoman Luanne Darbonne.
Intel's original plan called for the release of a 266MHz cacheless chip (the first Celeron, which was introduced last month), with a 333MHz integrated chip due in the first quarter of 1999. But company officials said unexpected improvements in manufacturing processes have made the new road map possible.
"The 0.25 [micron process] is ramping so well and quickly that we are able to get to volume earlier,'' Darbonne said.
Celeron is the newly branded name of Intel's first line of processors designed specifically for sub-$1,200 PCs. The chips work in conjunction with the 440EX, a lower-cost modification of the 440LX chip set.
While some top PC makers have introduced systems based on the first-generation Celeron, critics have said its performance is lacking and that competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s K6 and forthcoming K6-2 offer cheaper, higher-performance alternatives.
