Eric, based on your posts I went out this weekend and bought the book. Wow. I had no idea that I was going to take it the way I did. I am about halfway through, and a few thoughts come to mind:

Gil is not the terrible CEO I thought he was. I can see how frustrating it was to try to do things, and have people support you, but not do anything about your decisions.

I find his sincerity very real and not as dismissable as I thought. He seems to be truthful and gives himself his fare share of criticism. When criticizing others, he seems careful to protect confidentialities and not to hurl the insults out. He does a lot of praising when criticizing others.

I find myself wondering why some of the execs and higher-ups did nothing. For example, why did Guy Kawaski do nothing when asked for his input on a major white paper on Apple's strategy? Then when the paper started being formulated privately, why did Guy "wonder" why he couldn't get a peek at it?

Anyway, I still think Steve is SO MUCH better, but I do find myself realizing that Gil did institute a lot of changes that he will never get credit for. I find his book much more well rounded than I expected, given all the name calling I've read. It has lots of inside info. and perspective and I highly recommend everyone read it! More to come after I finish the book....
