Creative and the Internet

Imagine what Creative could have done with their brand name recognition if they had used that to bring sound over the Internet! WebBlaster. But instead, RealAudio dominates.

I am glad that Creative has not gone down this path. And disappointed that they have wasted money on Inspire. The problem is not that Creaf is not a software company (they produce and integrate a lot of software, from drivers to games to utilities) it is that internet software does not add to the bottom line. Know anyone who has bought RealAudio Player or Navigator or IE or Shockwave? The reality is companies like Real Networks (they make Real Audio) lose a lot of money (see below). They are awarded a high stock price because of future expectations (which I question).

I would rather see them make investments and form strategic alliances with those companies, like Intel. Intel invests in several startup multimedia companies that are creating processor intensive applications in order to drive demand for CPUs (and because they have a ton of cash). While Creative's investment in TDDDF has been profitable I don't think they will always be that lucky. Alliances with companies that are driving Internet standards would be better.

How about, buy a SoundBlaster get a copy of RealPlayer. Go to the Real Audio website and it recommends Best listened to with Soundblaster and Cambridge Soundworks speakers.

Business Summary

RealNetworks provides branded software products and services enabling the delivery of streaming media content over the Internet and intranets. For the fiscal year ended 12/97, revenues totalled $32.7 million, up from $14 million. Net loss totalled $11.2 million, up from $3.8 million. Revenues reflect licensing fees from Microsoft and a greater installed base of RNWK's products. Higher loss reflects increased R&D, expansion of the sales force and lower margins due to changes in the sales mix.
