Did GA reject but then use S. Jobs plan to replace Spindler as CEO ? According to Gil, he really had nothing to do with Spindler being replaced. He felt kind of bad for him, but also felt it was time for him to go. The board approached Gil about becoming CEO.
Did GA have distracting financial obligations ($5 mln AAPL loan) ? No. The 5 mil. was originally a sign-on bonus, but later (in negotiations) that bonus was to be considered a "loan" until he worked there 5 years, at which point the loan would be forgiven. The loan would be forgiven at the rate of $1 million per year. Gil didn't like this, but accepted.
Did GA sell (sold after firing) AAPL stock while CEO ? Not sure yet-haven't read that far. Will report when I find out-but I'm sure Eric already knows this answer.
Did GA commute to Apple by plane from his Lake Tahoe investment ? This is one of those where I feel bad for Gil. He said for years Apple had chartered exec. jets for the executives. He was an avid pilot and already owned his own jet. Why wouldn't he use it? Common sense would say of course he would just use his own and charge the normal expense to Apple. According to Gil, he charged LESS than cost for the use of the plane, and much less than apple normally paid to charter jets. I never knew any of this.
Did M. Markkula charge GA $17k/mo for servicing GA's plane ? See above. There was a charge, but again, apple has always charterd private jets which cost a fortune.
Does GA credit Ellen Hancock for justifying the NeXT purchase ? Haven't gotten that far yet either.
Does GA discuss Avie T. and M. Mandich's stock selling habits ? Same.
Did GA consider deferring his 4Q profit bonus due to 1Q97 losses ? Not sure yet.
The book is written from GA's perspective , but he along with Hancock deserve much credit for implementing AAPL's recovery . Until I started reading the book, I wouldn't have agreed with you. But I do now and I'm barely half way through. More answers soon! :)
