TR, Yes, you recall fairly well. To my knowledge the highest pre-split price was last summer, when the price rose to about 180. Then there was this spring, when we got to ~143.
However, that is relatively immaterial. The point is that DELL tries to keep the stock affordable for the working person, so they have historically announced splits when the stock is in the 80-90 range, with a planned post-split price of 40-50. However, last summer, the split was announced in May I believe, and the price ran for over two months. DELL wanted to do a split last fall, but discussions with some of their analysts led them to conclude that another split so soon and in the face of the Asian economic woes would have been considered gimmicky. Therefore they waited until this FEB to announce the split, which caused the stock price to be higher than the point at which they normally announce.
