Float is shares issued minus shares closely
held (company officers with trading restrictions, for instance)
and treasury stock. The float is the usual approximation of
the shares that are freely traded on the open market, about
as good a guess as any.

One place to find the current float is Yahoo's company profile
(one of the extended Yahoo quotes). The float doesn't change
rapidly, usually.
