Harmonic says TCI to use its DWDM product

ATLANTA, May 4 (Reuters) - Harmonic Lightwaves Inc. which introduced a new product to increase the capacity of cable television networks, said Monday Tele-Communications Inc (TCOMA - news; TCOMB - news) will use the technology to upgrade its Vancouver, Wash. system.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The METROlink product is a dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system that increases the bandwidth capacity of hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks to deliver services that require two-way communication.

TCI said it plans to upgrade many of its networks with DWDM systems to offer subscribers interactive services. In Vancouver, METROLink will be used to provide 30,000 homes with video services and high-speed Internet access through the Home Network

The system is 8 DWDM downstream,4 WDM upstream. It has approximately 80 times existing capacity. And the narrowcast receivers are scaleable,with new services. They piggyback the broadcast signal. I think the limitations of HFC have just been reduced by a factor of at least this much. But the scaleability is the key here.
