David, interesting point re. GTE. You may be right. In addition, they are shopping around for a US long distance provider after failed MCI bid, so building up the war chest by selling its interest in BC Tel might make sense. I would think that if either Telus or BCE was interested in BC Tel, they would have the GTE ducks lined up before going public. Perhaps, BC Tel is a better long term hold than Telus. I would think that in any bidding war for BC Tel, BCE would have a larger war chest to play with.

On the other hand, an argument for Telus being a more likely takeover candidate is that taking out BC Tel would not eliminate a problem partner from the consortium.

Time will tell how things will develop, if at all. Interesting action in the markets today with BCE and BC Tel up 2+ % and Telus down marginally.
