I called Fidelity about local safe keeping and was told that there is no such provision, but that stocks held in a cash account can not be lent etc. Do I believe that they can't play games with my shares? No.

Tomorrow I'll go higher up the chain and find out how their particular policies work. It seems that different brokers have different policies some of which allow them to use your money for their profit without just compensation. If I feel this is the case I'll have to look at a different broker.

Macker do you know if the broker's handbook/guidance manual that your broker read you is an internal document or some sort of Federal guideline?

Thanks to all for the good research.
