I am fairly confident that opening up the source code is a net plus to Netscape---perhaps markedly so.

You may be right. It was certainly a smart PR move. And investors seem to agree with you, as the stock has advanced nicely from about $19 to about $28 since the decision was made.

However, I, too, am having big problems understanding Netscape's business model. Until I hear from somebody like a David Locke a clear, cogent explanation of how Netscape will be able to make money using this model, I will remain cautious (although the "copyrighted" article you posted above was a good start).
