RE:I've got the distinct feeling we're missing something somewhere

I suspect you are absolutely right. When I listened to the c.call I was heartened by several things and made the comment (on WDC thread posts 9192 and 9193) that, to me at least, the reading between the lines, suggested that these guys have some "tricks up their sleeves" and further that re: endgame they have "+ a few other things (mysterious tone of voice)".

My gut was telling me rock'n roll longer term - that they were turning the corner. IBM may certainly be one of the "things". Since "few" implies more than one (!), I agree we have more to come!

RE: IMO they are very quick on their feet

Proven absolutely right!

Now what could they use some of their 513 million for?

- diversification into other HDD areas - perhaps but the IBM agreement suggests otherwise.
- diversification into other storage related areas - now here's an idea - consumer gadgets on the way will need oodles of storage in some form or the other - could they be interested? - besides this is the type of storage where "value" could be added (i.e., better margins) - acquisitions maybe?
- set up a plant in China or India ..... mmm. maybe not we have plenty of capacity
- spruce up the enterprise division by buying up something or someone or double up on R&D here (did you notice the IBM deal mentioned specifically desktops - does this imply with enterprise WDC is on their own? Musing not supported by facts)
- start another price war now that you have enough cash to weather the many battles... mmm.. I don't think so!!! ;-)

---

We shall see. Only "one" of the "few" has been shown!

Shane.
