NetCore Unveils Everest Integrated Switch At Networld + Interop's "Start-Up City"
May 5, 1998--
New "Monster Switch" will fuel growth of the Internet
NetCore Systems, Inc., today unveiled the Everest(TM) Integrated Switch, the ultra-performance platform for the new multiservice Internet, in the "Start-Up City" section of Networld + Interop. On display in booth #1919, Everest is designed to offer carriers and ISPs a risk-free way to increase the capacity of their core infrastructures and to converge their telephony and data networks onto a single backbone. It will also enable service providers to offer their business customers an array of new Internet services. "Everest, which offers the highest level of performance in its class, makes it possible for businesses to use the public IP network for a wide range of applications that cannot be handled by today's 'best effort' Internet," said Ashraf Dahod, NetCore's president and cofounder. "Equally important, Everest offers a risk-free migration path from today's legacy networks to the multiservice, business-friendly Internet of the future." Everest is a carrier-class networking platform that integrates the flexibility and breadth of IP-based services with the explicit resource allocation and guaranteed performance of ATM networking. Everest offers 10 Gbps to 640 Gbps (gigabits per second) of network interfaces with 2.5 Tbps (terabits per second) of switching capacity. Everest provides the first "multi-QoS" solution for IP by mapping IP flows to a variety of Quality of Service (QoS) classifications, including guaranteed reserved bandwidth. With this degree of granular QoS at their disposal, corporate customers will be able to migrate SNA and other transaction-oriented applications, as well as realtime applications such as telephony and video, from leased lines to Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) on the Internet. Everest will also enable telcos, ISPs and other service providers to offer corporate customers the different levels of service needed for these applications. In addition, Everest provides a clear, risk-free migration path from today's legacy networks to the predominantly IP networks of the future. Everest has this ability because it is fully compatible with existing IP routers and ATM switches and introduces no new protocols to routers or switches within customer networks. Furthermore, Everest implements distributed, policy-based IP/ATM QoS grounded on current IP and ATM standards, with the flexibility of using MPLS, RSVP and other related technologies as they are deployed. "With Everest, NetCore is not asking network service providers to choose between IP and ATM infrastructures. Service providers may deploy Everest within their current network infrastructure with the knowledge that the switch is capable of scaling to support future needs," said Frank Dzubeck, president of Communications Network Architects, Inc. "I applaud the fact that NetCore plans to support the IETF MPLS standard in order to provide interoperable QoS over the Internet."
