Del, Despite the popular press, special interest groups and certain Hollywood celebrities, fission reactors in the U. S. are one of the safest forms of energy ever developed by man. Not so much because of the system itself, but because of the built-in redundancies. The incident at Three Mile Island is a good example of Murphy's Laws taking full hold and not letting go -- yet the redundancies saved the day despite cascading stupid human errors. Contrary to Walter Cronkite's CBS Evening News report on the day of the incident, it was NOT "a nuclear nightmare". But it did make for good (although inaccurate) scare press. The opposite side of the coin are the former Soviet Union's "commercial" reactors which have little safety features, outdated technology and underpaid nuclear engineers. That situation is scary -- there may be 100 more Chernobyls waiting to happen. As stated. I would much prefer to see all current social programs (which are actually anti-freedom programs) eliminated and see some of the money going in to make fusion a reality in the very near future. The TOKOMAC (torroidal magnetic chamber) designs seem a dead end and the laser implosion still promising. Father Terrence
