AT&T Introduces New High-Speed Internet Access Options

BW1171 MAY 05,1998 6:01 PACIFIC 09:01 EASTERN

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1998--

Companies Get a Full Spectrum of Bandwidth Choices to Accommodate Growth

Targeting the burgeoning $2 billion market for high-speed corporate
Internet access, AT&T today introduced at the Networld+InterOp '98
trade show new bandwidth, billing, and firewall features for its AT&T
WorldNet(R) Managed Internet Service (MIS). AT&T WorldNet MIS
gives companies a managed, dedicated connection to the Internet through
AT&T's world-class IP backbone to support employee Internet access or
to connect corporations with suppliers and customers through LANs,
Intranets and electronic commerce web sites.

The new offerings include:

-- AT&T WorldNet MIS Inverse Multiplexing which gives companies
more
bandwidth choices and the cost effectiveness realized by
integrating voice, data and Internet traffic over one line

-- AT&T WorldNet MIS Tiered T3 bandwidth choices

-- a single bill for local access and Internet services

-- the "general availability" of AT&T WorldNet Managed Firewall
Service

-- a self-managed firewall solution (see related HP release)

-- an on-line customer service Web site

With the addition of these new offerings, AT&T is providing one of the
industry's most comprehensive menus of dedicated Internet access
solutions.
"Corporations are using the Internet today as a critical business tool for
core communications with their business partners and customers and to
drive revenue growth through e-commerce applications. IP has become
integral to business processes and AT&T offers the full spectrum of
bandwidth needs that corporations are demanding," said Kathleen Earley,
vice president of AT&T Networked Commerce Services.

New bandwidth choices

The addition of these new AT&T WorldNet MIS bandwidth options
provide customers with a robust choice of access speeds, ranging from the
entry-level 56Kbps through 45Mbps. This gives customers Internet access
speeds that meet any stage of growth ranging from 56Kbps to 1.544Mbps
using a T1 circuit, 3Mbps through 12Mbps via multiple T1 circuits, and
10Mbps through 45Mbps via a T3 circuit.

AT&T WorldNet MIS Inverse Multiplexer Service

Beginning today, new or existing AT&T WorldNet MIS customers can
purchase the Inverse Multiplexing service. With this technology, customers
can aggregate from two to eight T1 circuits into a single channel to increase
bandwidth capacity and achieve Internet connectivity at speeds ranging
from 3Mbps to 12Mbps.
AT&T will install a Larscom inverse multiplexer along with a router on
the customer's premises which terminates all the separate T1 circuits into
one logical channel. The inverse multiplexer also balances traffic loads
among the circuits and provides diversity and automatic fallback and
recovery should one or more T1 circuits fail.
Additionally, companies can purchase a channelized T3 circuit and use
the spare capacity to carry voice and data on the unused channels.
"This offer gives customers a middle ground," Earley added. "Customers
will have the flexibility of easily adding additional T1s without making a large
capital investment in excess equipment, as multiple routers or CSU/DSUs
are not required. AT&T's continuum of bandwidth options makes it easy
for companies to grow."

This offer is in controlled introduction and uses AT&T's dedicated
private line facilities.

Tiered T3 Services

For companies that require high-bandwidth access to the Internet,
AT&T is now offering tiered T3 circuits throughout the continental U.S. at
speeds of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45Mbps. These incremental
connection speeds expand AT&T's current services (10Mbps and T3) to
give companies more flexibility in scaling Internet access as their needs
grow.
The tiered T3 prices are flat-rate charges and do not vary with customer
use.

Bundled Pricing - One bill for local and Internet access

AT&T WorldNet MIS customers with 56Kbps or T1 connectivity can
elect to have a single bill that combines charges for AT&T WorldNet MIS
and the local loop (from the customer's premises to the nearest AT&T
point-of-presence) at one low monthly price.
This bundled pricing is very competitive and provides a one-stop shop
for Internet and local access. AT&T coordinates the service installation with
the local access company and provides one toll-free number to resolve any
problems that may arise with the Internet connection.

Four Security Options

AT&T WorldNet MIS customers can choose from four security options
which include a choice of managing a firewall themselves or having AT&T
manage it for them.

The AT&T WorldNet Managed Firewall Service, introduced in January
1998, becomes generally available today as an option available with AT&T
WorldNet MIS. With this fully-managed firewall solution AT&T security
experts proactively monitor the network and the customer's on-premises
equipment (routers, servers, and operating system), and respond to security
threats or break-in attempts. Additionally, AT&T monitors the performance
and capacity of the key components deployed at the customers' sites. It
includes installation, configuration, and around-the-clock management of
firewall hardware and software.

Additionally, AT&T provides three customer-managed firewall solutions.

-- The HP - AT&T Secure Internet Access Solution, introduced today
(see related HP release), consists of AT&T's WorldNet MIS, an HP
Enterprise Server bundled with Check Point Firewall-1 network
security software from Check Point(TM) Software Technologies
Ltd., or Novell(R) BorderManager(TM)

-- The AT&T - Sun Netra(TM) offer, an all-in-one Intranet solution
that includes AT&T WorldNet MIS, a powerful Sun Microsystems'
Netra(TM) Web server to host content, Netscape(R) software for
developing and managing content, and firewall software developed
by Check Point Software Technologies, Ltd.

-- An AT&T bundled offer which includes discounts up to 10 percent
off AT&T WorldNet Managed Internet Service, Bay Networks Instant
Internet(TM) access server and firewall and an optional CSU/DSU
(channel service unit/digital service unit). Anixter, Inc.,
provisions this offer.

New Online Customer Web Site

AT&T opened a new customer support Web site for its AT&T
WorldNet MIS customers at www.worldnet-mis.att.net. Businesses can
use the site to get network status, request new services or changes, or to
access information on billing, service options, site preparation and service
implementation.

Guaranteed Service

AT&T WorldNet MIS includes a service availability guarantee. If an
MIS customer provisioned on the AT&T IP backbone experiences an
outage for a period of 15 minutes or more per day, AT&T will credit the
customer for one day of service(b). Additionally, AT&T WorldNet MIS
offers:

-- A high-speed meshed T3 and OC-3 Internet backbone

-- Expertise in communications and networking.

-- Customer support 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including
technical assistance and proactive monitoring.

-- High network availability, including over 580 points of presence
nationwide.

-- Connectivity via private line, frame relay or SINA

-- Optional services that include a complete AT&T managed solution,
primary domain name services (DNS), secondary DNS, network news
feeds, packet filtering, usage reports, redundant configurations
and security services.
