Judy, In a nutshell, here's a previous post on Netscape:

techstocks.com

As for the gold stocks, they generally move as a group, but a great way to start your research is Bob Johnson's home page. He has a comprehensive shareware Excel spreadsheet you can download that covers fundamentals (reserves, production, cost of extraction, etc.) of all the mining companies worldwide. To me Barrick Gold, barrick.com ,is the "Intel" of gold-mining companies, the largest outside South Africa, fourth-largest in the world, the bluest chip...incredibly well managed. Barrick's Carlin Trend Goldstrike mine in Nevada is a monster.

Battle Mountain is my favorite US company. It's big, in fact is a component of the S&P 500. To me, the others on my list have some interesting operating leverage. Miramar is my favorite "penny" value play.

Right now I wouldn't play around with the exploration companies...too much of a crap shoot, unless you really know your stuff, and are tight with the knowledgeable crowd in Vancouver.

A sane way to start investing, too, would be through a gold fund.
