Malone want multiplexing and digital tiers.......................

multichannel.com

How do ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox like the idea? "They love it; they're scared of it," Malone said of the free channel given to broadcasters for HDTV. The issue, he said, is, "How do they tell Congress that they're going to charge for it?"

As far as digital must-carry, Malone said, it's still too soon to make any presumptive assessments, but "I want them [the Federal Communications Commission] to tell me exactly what services to take off" in order to make room for any mandated broadcast HDTV services.

On the cable side, Malone said, he likes ABC's approach -- 720-progressive-scan format, at 36 frames -- and he added that in order to accommodate Home Box Office's recent plans to go with the 1080-interlace format, TCI will pass the signal through to digital HDTV sets for decoding.
