Linda,
System migration issues are hard no matter what OS you use, and I think they seem harder on the Mac because people don't expect them at all.
On Windows NT (which I have at work), when things like this happen, they just automatically erase the hard drive, and reinstall everything.
Ironically, this works well on the Mac, except it is a bit easier thanks to clean install (assuming you have the free HD space).
What I typically do is this: 1) Clean install the latest system (8.1, for now) 2) Reinstall "problem apps" (Acrobat, Netscape, Eudora) 3) Reset my system prefs, internet config. 4) I then use the computer, moving stuff from the old system folder only when I need it. You'd be surprised how much cruft can accumulate over time that you no longer need.
The secret to sanity is not throwing away anything until you *know* you don't need it. The price of sanity down the road is HD space.
Anyway, you'd be surprised how pleasant it is to run on a clean system. You may never go back :)
Now, for AAPL... Tomorrow is a big day. |
