Charles,

You are right in terms of manufacturing efficiency. I don't know the answer for this -- does anyone have stats on the number of SPARC chips produced and sold each year? I'm simply assuming, perhaps incorrectly, that the number is orders of magnitude less than Pentium / Pentium II's etc.

Divide plant costs & manufacturing costs by number of chips sold and you get a rough idea of where I am heading with this.

For this reason Alpha just couldn't survive, not without the kind of cooperation that is shaking up with Intel / Digital. And even then, who knows where that story will end up.

With fab plants costing mega billions and getting more expensive each time densities go up... well, its a game of mighty big stakes.

Cheers
