Doc:

A CD or DVD can reach a user any way you want. Let's say you send it (and several others, while you're at it) in the mail (a la AOL). It's Wave-enabled: encrypted to protect the provider; ready for micro-transactional use by the recipient. The user can try it out, rent-it-to-own, etc., simply by tapping his WaveAccount. The books are kept by the WaveMeter until it is convenient or necessary to touch base online to settle up and replenish the WaveAccount.

Thus, to a user who has a WaveMeter and a WaveAccount, physical media represent "bandwidth." When he finds the product -- in this example, in his snail-mailbox -- he can access it at the data-transfer rate of his CD or DVD drive. He need not be tied to a network. He need not pull the content through a wire. The speed of his access is not constrained by the capacity of his modem or the quality of his phone line.

As broadbands emerge, the Wave system can exploit them just as readily.
