Paul,
If they use the MediaGX, they will have to sell it for $499 - about $299 cheaper than an Intel-based PC.
I don't think it has anything to do with Intel. If they can put together a box that can sell for $499, they probably will do it.
Have you been to a home electronics store recently? It's full of cheap stuff. The cheap stuff outsells the quality stuff by a wide margin.
Cheapness of computer stuff may create new markets. For example, I received recently a little radio in mail from Bloomberg that connects only to their radio station (in NYC). They can give away this stuff "for free" because the cost of the radios and mailing is very cheap.
Remember - putting a Cyrix chip inside a PC is tanatamount to telling the consumer "Cheap Stuff Inside - Buy At Your Own Risc - That's Why We Are Selling This So Cheaply".
More FUD? Don't you get tired of it? People buy lot of stuff that's not "the best". Last time I looked on the street, there were plenty of cars other than Lincoln Navigators, Toyota Landcruisers, BMWs etc.
People are happy in their Camry's, VWs, Chevys. They go around not at all feeling guilty about not buying the most expensive, or the best stuff.
