Penni - I suspect that your lead guitarist may have taken your advice (to learn some music) after all. I've been told (by my son, a former flutist turned professional bass guitarist) that it's practically impossible to make it as a studio musician if you can't read music (or at least charts).

I agree wholeheartedly with the point you make about creativity. The need for rigorous training (which alone allows one's creativity to flourish) is not as obvious in the arts as it perhaps should be.

In the exact sciences, it probably still is. I am reminded of the old story about some very "creative" engineers. They designed this fabulous bridge, and after many years of work it is completed, with a great deal of fanfare. Everyone is applauding, and drinking champagne, of course. Suddenly, the whole bridge begins shuddering -- and finally it collapses into the bay! One of the engineers stands staring at the wreckage, and then mutters to himself: "Oops -- I guess I put that decimal point in the wrong place!"
