The Neopath Autopap is an image analysis computer designed and programmed to select the pap smears with probable atypia/cancer.
The FDA has approved the Autopap to be set at a 25% signout rate, since each machine runs 240 pap smears per day, you can eliminate the need for human screening of 60 smears, that is about what an expensive cytotech screens per day, not including QC.
The autopap also ranks the smear by probability of abnormality present. Quite a safety net when you consider that all techs have been flying without a net except for the few high risk and random slides that are pulled for secondary screening.
I like to compare the skills and training of cytotechs to that of cosmetic surgeons, you have the full range of bad to excellent with a fat bell curve of mediocre techs screening daily. This technology will not only catch a lot of the missed cancer cells but it should also eliminate a lot of the over treatment that results from paranoid, lawsuit shy cytotechs overcalling the confusing artifacts present on many pap smears. I hope this has helped. I have screened behind many cytotechs and I embrace this technology.
