After market close, MICROSOFT CORP CEO Bill Gates charged that
the federal and state governments were seriously considering a
plan to delay Windows 98 and said that to do so would hurt the
U.S. economy. Gates said that the states and federal government
have spent resources to, "scour up any kind of (legal) theory."
"This is a very serious situation," he said. "I wouldn't give the
probability, but we read every day that there is a very good
chance that some people might do this. It is under serious
consideration. "Any government action that would derail or delay
Windows 98 would hurt the American economy and would cost American
jobs ...the effect would be profound and would ripple through the
economy." (Reuters 03:38 PM ET 05/05/98)
