Intel , Fore in networking pact

SAN FRANCISCO, May 5 (Reuters) - Semiconductor giant Intel
Corp. and Fore Systems Inc., a developer of networking
products, announced an alliance to integrate two competing
networking technologies, in a move that will expand the markets
for both.

Intel has a fast-growing networking business mostly focused
on selling Ethernet technology such as adapter cards to small
and medium-sized businesses in desktops and network servers and
Fore develops asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) products which
create the network backbone for large corporate customers.

The companies said they will integrate these two
technologies in joint product developmemt and some joint
marketing and sales efforts.

"There is a big demand for ATM in the backbone and Ethernet
is extremely popular and well-known and well understood," said
Thomas Gill, president and CEO of Fore. "From the deskop to
servers, there is an opportunity to work with Ethernet
technology." He said customers in big corporations want both
Ethernet and ATM technology in their networks.

Gill said that Fore already offers some Ethernet products
to its customers but it will now be able to expand its product
offerings to include products for the small to medium sized
businesses that Intel addresses, while Intel will gain entree
to large corporate customers who want both technologies.

Financial terms were not disclosed. The companies said that
the alliance will expand both of their markets by enabling them
to offer "end-to-end solutions."

The first result of this pact is a switch developed by Fore
called a FORE ES-2810 Switch, which incorporates Intel's Fast
Ethernet switching technology. It will be available in June and
was introduced at the Networld+Interop show in Las Vegas.
