I have had an account with E*Trade for 3 years or so, long before the web came about. I used to access it via CompuServe. Back when I started, RKS (Reynolds Kendrick Stratton) was the clearing broker for ETrade. No kidding. Then they changed their name to JB Oxford. Somewhat later, ETrade dropped JB Oxford (don't know why) and changed to Herzog, Heine, Geduld, one of the major market makers. It was only this summer that ETrade went to self-clearing.

I never had any problems when RKS/JB Oxford was the clearing broker and I am neither blasting nor recommending them. Just thought I would pass on this curious historical relationship.
