jfred, I've got a loop round Chimp's ankles, so back to bearding the quark. Thanks for the compliment - all crumbs gratefully accepted. "Maurice is more consistent than Max". That is because "Max" has the damn inconsistent x-factor whereas "Maurice" is much more prosaic.
Just to round up so far. There is consciousness and free will in mice, guinea pigs, monkeys, people and Dogs. So we have an approximately defined place to go hunting the x factor, perhaps with an inverse correlation with how hirsute the subject is. While there might be indeterminacy in the quarking world, we don't need that for the X factor in brains. Right? Now we are getting somewhere. Are there any other areas of indeterminacy that you are aware of? Or are all other processes causal? You are happy that rocks just sit there or go where they are told?
I was comingling the quarks and X factor as it seemed that the X crowd dive into the little world to substantiate their X factor. But as long as you keep off Heisenberg and the little guys, I'm happy to stick with digging in the brain.
So back to whiskers. If we extend the argument to function - how many whiskers makes warmth? Well, one doesn't, but all of them do. Chimp could do some calculus there to determine warmth curves versus number of hairs. So if warmth was linked to the X factor, maybe there is a level of warmth below which heat loss exceeds a critical amount and the X factor fails to fire. Hmmmm. Sort of like a chemical reaction. Add more warmth and suddenly, hey presto, like magic, the reactions reach critical energy levels and off it goes. Sort of like Matthew's http about reaction times and critical potentials for firing. Am I getting warm?
I hope this is backing up my argument!! Initially I'd thought of the simple beard definition - how many make a beard. But it is getting a bit more tricky now with function in there..
