WSJ - "Everest is a new definition of an eyeful"!
Jim:
I just spotted a review of Everest in the 4.28 issue of the WSJ -
"Notable New Movies"
Here are a couple of paragraphs from it...
--alan

>Since Everest opened last month at 19 of the nation's 90 or so IMAX
>theatres, it's been racking up phenomenal per screen grosses, and its no
>wonder. The screens befit the subject. Imagine, if you can - you really
>can't - the movie medium's biggest, tallest, clearest images devoted to
>the planet's most majestic expression of upness. (The film has now
>expanded to 25 theatres in this country and 49 theatres around the world.)
>...
>
>But those images! Even before the climbing party moves to Nepal from its
>training area in southwest Utah, we're treated to a drop-dead wonderful
>shot from a heliocopter as the chopped slips and slides through a red-rock
>arch. And well before the climbers approach the summit - they acclimatized
>themselves to the altitude by spending five weeks encamped at 22,000 feet
>- we see them as crawling specks on a titanic ice field. (I could have
>sworn I smelled the crystalline air.) For me the most memorable - maybe
>because most vertiginous - shots are those that were made looking downward
>as the cinematographer (with his scaled down, 35-pound IMAX camera)
>crossed an ice crevasse on an aluminum ladder. But then who's to argue
>most or best when the movie also reveals prayer flags aflutter at the
>summit, or, a world below in Katmandu, 25,000 butter lamps aglow at a
>Buddhist temple? "Everest" is a new definition of an eyeful.
