WDC has always tried to have two head suppliers. Otherwise they have no control of the head costs and their suppliers could take unreasonable margins.

The IBM news is news because IBM has not been a WDC supplier of heads in the past. It is not news that WDC will want two suppliers of GMR heads.

WDC needs to show its investors that they have something planned in the future to compete against the optical assisted heads of SEG and QNTM. IBM has tried to get a lot of publicity from its GMR heads. I do not see the news that IBM and WDC are talking about future head contracts as a surprise or as big news. They probably talked about MR heads too but IBM does not compete with established technology.
