Gates meets with DOJ officials news.com

My, things seem to be heating up.

NEW YORK--Microsoft chairman Bill Gates met with senior Justice Department officials last night as a possible new antitrust action against the software company loomed, according to reports.

Gates sought the meeting with lead antitrust prosecutor Joel Klein to make a personal and direct presentation of what would be at stake in any new antitrust suit, both the Wall Street Journal and Post-Intelligencer reported, citing two unnamed people familiar with plans for the meeting.

Oh, I think Mr. Klein has a perfectly fine idea what's at stake. Think he got the usual "innovation! /Chrysler car radio" spiel? Elsewhere on the political front, this story, with a tiny quote strictly for entertainment:

Microsoft's Home Politicos Stay Mostly Mum techweb.com

Gorton was joined by Sen. Lauch Faircloth (R-N.C.), whose home state also hosts major Microsoft campuses. "I have grave concerns with the threat by the Justice Department to block Windows 98 from being shipped to retailers," Faircloth said. "I believe the president has to look very seriously at reining in rogue bureaucrats at the Justice Department that are intent on regulating, and perhaps ruining, America's technology industry."

Wow, Bill's got both Mr. Salvage Rider and the esteemed Senator from N.C. on his team now. I don't know about a major Microsoft campus in N.C., but with Faircloth's instrumental roll in getting that other rogue bureaucrat Ken Starr appointed, I sort of doubt he'll have much success appealing to that other Bill to get DOJ off of his friend's case. Ruining America's technology industry! The humanity!

Cheers, Dan.
