[it's an opinion from someone who did not see the problem Singapore got itself in]

Asia as a whole has had problems, but the last time I checked, Singapore wasn't doing too badly. The big meltdowns in Asia have occurred in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Korea. (And, probably, this list will expand to include China and Japan.)

I'd avoid investing in western Europe right now -- Europe is the dead past, focused on their supposedly glorious history, and they won't be very competitive economically until they dismantle their extensive welfare state. Europe has got it all -- high taxes, huge amounts of bureaucracy, and high unemployment.
