DEPLOYMENTS OF WINDOWS NT SERVER IN FORTUNE 1,000
COMPANIES SKYROCKET

Availability of Microsoft Certified Professionals Supporting Adoption Explodes

LAS VEGAS, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced
new data from Computer Intelligence Inc. showing a 200 percent increase in the number of
Fortune 1,000 companies that have deployed the Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Server
network operating system in the past 12 months. As of March 1998, more than 86 percent
of these organizations have deployed Windows NT Server, while UNIX deployments remain
at 61 percent. To support this adoption, 120,000 Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs)
have been trained to install, configure, support and/or administer Windows NT Server, an
increase of 150 percent in the past 12 months.

"Fortune 1,000 companies lead the industry in innovation and continually push technology
to its limits," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president, personal and business systems group
at Microsoft. "These organizations are moving to Windows NT Server to decrease the costs
of deploying and managing scalable and reliable enterprise solutions and to take advantage
of its integrated Web, application and communication services."

Enterprise customers that have deployed Windows NT Server 4.0 include America West
Airlines, Arthur Andersen LLP, Barnes & Noble Inc., Chicago Stock Exchange, Compaq
Computer Corp., CompUSA Inc., Continental Airlines Inc., ConXion Corp., Cox
Communications Inc., Dayton Hudson Corp., Dell Computer Corp., Deloitte & Touche LLP,
Eddie Bauer Inc., First Union Corp., General Mills Inc., HarperCollins Publishers Inc., MCI
Telecommunications Inc., Merrill Lynch Company Inc., Nautica International Inc., Office
Depot Inc., Owens-Corning, Pennzoil Co., Pitney Bowes Inc., PulsePoint Communications
Corp., Revlon, Saturn Corp., Solectron Corp., Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., United
Airlines and Universal Studios.

"We have a mission-critical environment that demands the highest levels of system
uptime," said Sushil Vyas, vice president in charge of First Union Capital Market's
Windows NT Server-based infrastructure. "By migrating our overall network infrastructure to
Windows NT Server 4.0, we have a platform that is reliable, secure, scalable and year
2000-compliant and that will allow us to easily take advantage of the benefits of Windows
NT Server 5.0."

Additional data shows that more customers are planning to license and deploy Windows
NT Server than the combination of all other network operating systems included in the data.
According to Computer Intelligence's survey of nearly 5,000 LAN administrators in March
1998, 70 percent of companies plan to acquire Windows NT Server 4.0, more than twice as
many as the next most popular choice.
