Let me run through an example of sizing up if there is any stock to be bought. REMEMBER, you have to be ready to buy if they have it!!!! Don't try this yourself, it will just get you in trouble !!!!! You have the money to buy 100,000 shares of a stock. You call the MM's looking tp buy 100,000 and at what price they can fill you. If the deal is wet with paper, they will work with you. If they don't have it, or access to any, they back off the ask. (Not always. you can imagine how often this is done by "players") Now, lets say the MM thinks the deal is shit. He might just fill you. Now you have a short. Well, let say the deal turns real, and the stock runs a bit and the MM wants to cover. He can't get the paper out of the market so he or someone else cals the company and aks if they need some capital. The company does a financing with someone, the paper is used to cover the short, the company gets money, and then - Hey!- let's do it again !!! sorry to make this sound a bit confusing, but I hope you get the idea of how it can work.... Example only !!!!!
