What is with this stock? Went below $15 today, after having been nearly $17 before the 14% better-than-expected 1st quarter earnings were announced. The consensus 1998 earnings projections have been increased, and are now 66 cents/share. And the projection for the "next 5 years" remains 33.3% annual eps growth. Is the fact that the 1999 number (80 cents/share) has not been revised upward (yet) weighing on the stock? Seems like more of an oversight than a serious prediction. Yet I suppose some people will look at those numbers and say "hmmm... only expected to grow 21% from '98 to '99". If SMMT shows the 33.3% growth, that 1999 number would be more like 88 cents/share. And it seems too early to forecast beyond that, but anyone can take a calculator and figure out some numbers for the next few years, if they are so inclined and believe the projected rates are accurate. That will yield some very impressive numbers, especially for a stock under $15/share. And if you check the numbers at the bottom of the following link, you can see (Earnings History) that SMMT has handily beaten the projections over the past 5 consecutive quarters. Oh, well... enough ranting by me.
