Brian, old man, I will have no money shortage if I die before I spend my last dollar which would need to happen tomorrow in my case to prevent a shortage.

I think an academic type, confronted with the prospect of an oil shortage as we all were in the 70's, might well choose to investigate this subject objectively using the scientific method, especially if this was his field of study, he was intellectually curious, and socially concerned, and he could eventually make a buck doing it. This subject would easily lend itself to apparent long term study as time is relative. If he started 20 years ago and now concludes that the real shortage will occur in 10 more years then we are talking about 30 years which in my time frame is a short period of time. The last 30 years went too fast for my liking. If we knew the oil was going to run out in 20 years, we would need to work harder and smarter to find affordable alternatives, imo. I think he suspected a real energy problem was developing within our lifetimes which would require a dedicated response and he set out to objectively determine and define the problem with objective research regardless of the funding for his research, imo.
