Beamer, Campbell's studies focus on the world's reservoir production profiles. That a shortage will result in x amount of time is the result. All of which is very useful and valuable information to oil companies that we can be certain he is paid for. The fact that his work is commercial increases, not diminishes it's credibilty IMO.

And Scientific American isn't generally known for publishing garbage, though it may appear that way 100 years later.
