News - Versalock System Sale To Headway Technologies
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Plasma-Therm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTIS) announced today the sale of a Versalock(R), plasma processing system to Headway Technologies, Inc., a leading manufacturer of thin film magneto-resistive (MR) recording heads. The system incorporates Plasma-Therm's Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) technology and will be used in high volume production processes.
Dr. Jay Sasserath, the Company's Vice President, Strategic Marketing, stated, "This is a significant order for Plasma-Therm since the etch process that the system will be used for has traditionally been performed using an Ion Beam Etch system. Through the application of Plasma-Therm's advanced plasma process technology, we were able to clearly demonstrate the advantages of the reactive process over the ion beam method. Once the production process is fully characterized, we expect to receive follow-on orders for this process throughout the data storage industry."
Dr. Mike Chang, President of Headway Technologies, Inc., added, "Plasma-Therm has been a good technology partner for Headway in the past. We have a number of Plasma-Therm Versalock(R) systems running production processes currently and this purchase will add to that install base. We will continue to work with Plasma-Therm in the development of other thin film etch and deposition processes to advance Headway's technological capabilities and strengthen our leadership position in the MR head market."
