<A Y2K-created rush to COTS RTOS is a theme that deserves watching.>

If this rush were to take place, then would it be fair to say that Windows CE's new "real" version, assuming that it will take another year to be released, would arrive too late in the market to capture much of the rush? This suggests the possibility of accelerating Wind's dominance and making MSFT's entry into RTOS that much more difficult.

I'm not sure I agree with this. I've held WIND for a couple years now and am confident about their future; however, I'd be surprised if there was a big rush to COTS RTOS simply because of Y2K (how's that for alphabet soup?).

I work in software development, and I see the Y2K problem as a "test to find the problem areas, then patch them" type of problem. I can't imagine rewriting an entire system simply because of Y2K. Just because Y2K bugs can have a profound effect doesn't necessarily mean that the entire system needs to be reworked. Look at all the COBOL programmers being hired for this problem -- I doubt they're being hired to start from scratch writing a brand-new, cutting-edge, Y2K-compliant version of an existing system using COBOL! :-)

Point is, they are there to patch the system. I've never done work with an RTOS, but I would imagine it would be the same in that space. Maybe WIND will get some increased consulting revenues to help customers ensure Y2K-compliance.

Regards,

Jim
