Attention Business And Technology Editors:
MKS SELECTED BY MICROSOFT TO SUPPLY KEY TECHNOLOGY FOR WINDOWS NT SERVICES FOR UNIX ADD-ON PACK
WATERLOO, Ont., May 6 /CNW/ -- Mortice Kern Systems Inc. (MKS) (TSE: MKX) today announced that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT). Microsoft will license a subset of UNIX(R) utilities from the MKS Toolkit(R) . The unique strengths of Windows NT and UNIX systems have compelled companies to make substantial investments in both technologies to drive mission critical business processes. The challenge for these organizations is interoperability -- enabling Windows NT Workstation, Windows NT Server and UNIX systems to work together -- which simplifies management and reduces support costs. MKS, the market leader in NT and UNIX interoperability, delivers the most sophisticated solution addressing this massive technology challenge. Microsoft plans to use this set of UNIX scripting commands, including the popular Kornshell, as part of upcoming Windows NT Services for UNIX Add-On Pack. This Microsoft product, which includes other core interoperability components such as NFS and password synchronization, will make it easier for customers to integrate Windows NT into their existing UNIX environments. MKS technology incorporated into the product will enable customers to run many existing UNIX scripts on Windows NT-based systems. ''Microsoft is committed to delivering best of breed software solutions to our corporate customers, and this agreement with MKS certainly reflects this direction. MKS is a recognized industry leader, providing high-quality, powerful tools delivering UNIX interoperability for Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server,'' says Frank Artale, general manager for enterprise systems management at Microsoft Corp. ''The full capabilities of MKS Toolkit, provide an excellent complement to the core utilities licensed by Microsoft.'' ''Windows NT and UNIX can work together seamlessly thanks to MKS Toolkit's wildly popular technology,'' says Randall Howard, MKS Chairman and CEO. ''This alliance builds upon Microsoft and MKS's long standing relationship and also expands opportunities for MKS into the Windows NT administration and Windows 95 markets at home and abroad.'' While Microsoft has licensed a subset of MKS's utilities, the MKS Toolkit contains a comprehensive set of more than 210 sophisticated Windows and UNIX tools and offers the following additional advantages: Multiple platform support, including Windows 95 Win 32-specific features including security and environment commands Powerful utilities for Web development, systems administration and software development
