Mike - Here is Digital's response to why their UNIX product is better than Sun's Solaris. Any idea as to what Sun's upgrade path is for customers that plan to utilize the Intel Merced processor and need scalability? Will they have to eventually upgrade to a SPARC processor?

From the article:

QUESTION: That doesn't explain what Digital Unix offers better than Solaris. Could you elucidate?

ANSWER: We believe we have a very compelling value proposition to the Intel and the Unix community relative to Solaris. Although Sun won't say this, when you talk to people they're recruiting, Sun is not putting all of Solaris on IA-64. They are withholding the scalability functionality. If you look at the organizational structure, Solaris is owned by SunSoft. But the scalability function is owned by Sun Microsystems Computer Corp., the folks who own the Ultra Enterprise 10000. That stuff is not going to get ported.
